Apprenticeship
Children are eligible for an apprenticeship the moment they grow out of the infant stage. As an apprentice, the child will grow in skill levels pertaining to that trade's relevant skill.
Seeking Apprenticeship
In order for your child to become an apprentice, you must speak with the head of the profession you wish for them to work at. If a trade has empty worker slots, there will be a golden "Apprentice" button that appears when you talk to the head. The NPC will agree, and you should see the job under the child's task dropdown menu when you click on their portrait under the Family tab. This should be their task by default.
Heads of a trade will constantly fluctuate as NPCs die, typically moving on to the next most senior worker. If everyone in a trade has passed, they will be replaced by a new randomly-generated NPC when the next ship comes into town.
